Day 6...around Inverness

Our 6th day in Scotland started at Culloden battlefield, near the city of Inverness. The battle of Culloden was fought in 1746 by the Scottish Highlanders (in support of the Catholic Bonny Prince Charlie) and the British government (reigning monarch is the Hanover King George II).

Red flags marked the government, while blue flags marked the Highlander, front lines.

The battlefield is an important historic site because it was the last battle fought on British soil, and because it marked the death of Scottish Highland culture. Measures were taken to destroy clans and the wearing of tartan was outlawed.

But honestly the only reason I found the battlefield at all interesting was because I’ve read Outlander (specifically the 2nd book Dragonfly in Amber), and the battle of Culloden is very important to Claire and Jamie.

So while it was nice to wander the moors and the included audioguide was well done, you can probably skip the battlefield if you are interested in neither military history nor Outlander. They did have a nice gift shop though!
