Our next stop of the day was the town of St. Andrews. St. Andrews is known for 3 things: the University (where Prince William met Kate Middleton), golf, and the beach!

The beach is famous because of the movie Chariots of Fire. I actually got to watch Chariots of Fire on the plane ride home, and sure enough, they run down this beach in the opening of the movie, along with the famous theme music.

I just had to set my toes in the North Sea (Marjorie actually already had last winter when she went to Denmark)!

I also had to touch the grass on the Old Course. Rick Steves calls it “the mecca of golf.” It’s basically the world’s oldest golf course. Wikipedia says it dates to medieval times. I don’t even like golf and I find that exciting; imagine how the golf fans in our group felt!

But I think my favorite part of St Andrews was the cathedral.

As you can see, the cathedral is in ruins. The best thing about a cathedral in ruins is that you can climb on it!

St. Andrews has a lot to offer to tourists. We also ate lunch (reportedly at one of Will and Kate’s favorite pubs!) and went to the museum to learn about the history of the University. And there were plenty of shops, many of which were appealing for those on a university-student budget. Probably my favorite stop of the whole tour.
